Teaching Your Children By Example
Imitation, or mimicry, is one of the first things every child learns. Imitation is a stepping stone for young kids towards learning new skills, learning how to communicate, and learning how to take care of themselves and others. This is a crucial stage, as children would consider your way as the right way and pattern their behavior accordingly. By the examples you set, your child would now have guidelines on how he or she would act from childhood, adulthood to old age.
This is why it’s essential for parents to be consistent in the way they raise their children. We also need to show consistency in how we deal with other people – our parents, significant others, friends and family members who play a part in our children’s rearing. We’re all human, and when you make a mistake, show ownership and don’t make excuses – let your child know you didn’t do the right thing.
We also need to take proper care of ourselves. It is easy to neglect one’s needs when spending so much time taking care of the children and their needs. Our family and children matter so much to us, so it’s important that we maintain our health on all accounts so that we can be the perfect role model when it comes to taking care of our children at this crucial stage in their lives. Taking advantage of this opportunity allows us to love our children in the best way possible, while on the other hand, setting the best example by loving ourselves. As a result, your child will learn to love him or herself and develop more confidence in self. You can set an example by getting a sitter while you and your spouse go out on a movie date just like you used to back in the early days. While you may be gone for a short while, your kids will learn to get along during this short period of time, and see you as a real person, and not just Mom or Dad.
Speaking of which, you also need to maintain a healthy relationship with your spouse. This is a chance for your children to see how you engage in healthy discussion and interaction with your spouse, and see how marriages should be ideally.
By imitating these proper behaviors and actions, your child can grow up to be a productive adult. All you need is to say and do the right things as your child develops that self-esteem he or she needs in life.
